How to Toast Nuts and Seeds at Home (Stovetop & Oven)

Short answer: Spread nuts in a single layer and toast on medium heat (skillet) or at 175°C / 350°F (oven) until fragrant and lightly golden, stirring often. Cool fully before storing.

Time: 5–12 minMethods: Skillet or ovenDifficulty: Easy

Note: This is a plain toast guide (oil optional). For salted roasted almonds specifically, see our existing salted almond roast notes.

Stovetop method (small batches)

  1. Use a wide dry skillet on medium heat.
  2. Add ½–1 cup nuts/seeds in a single layer.
  3. Stir almost constantly 3–7 minutes until fragrant and lightly coloured.
  4. Tip onto a cool plate immediately (they keep cooking on a hot pan).

Oven method (larger batches)

  1. Heat oven to 175°C (350°F).
  2. Spread nuts on a tray in one layer.
  3. Toast 6–10 minutes, shaking halfway. Denser almonds take longer than softer walnuts.
  4. Cool on a fresh plate.

Trust your nose: Done smells toasty-sweet. Bitter or smoky means they’ve gone too far — discard burnt pieces.

How to use toasted nuts

  • Breakfast bowls — see nuts for breakfast
  • Salads, raita toppings, and yogurt
  • Chopped over oatmeal or overnight oats

Storage

Cool completely, then airtight jar up to 1 week at room temperature for best aroma. Longer storage: fridge. More pantry advice: storage guide.

FAQ

Do I need oil?

No for dry toasting. A light spray of oil helps salt stick if you season.

Can I toast mixed nuts together?

Better toast similar densities together, or pull faster-toasting nuts earlier.

Why toast at all?

Heat brings out aroma and crunch, so a small handful tastes more satisfying.
